Two-bike and tandem-capable racks most often list a 2-bicycle capacity. Per-bike weight limits vary by model — commonly from about 35 lb up to 75 lb — and total capacities typically range from about 70 lb to 150 lb depending on the rack.

Platform-style hitch racks commonly accommodate wheel sizes from about 16" to 29" and list wheelbase capacities from roughly 30" up to around 63.7", depending on the model.

Many racks list tire-width support around 5 inches, with some platform designs supporting up to about 5.5 inches. Some models also note optional fat-bike fit kits to extend compatibility.

Racks commonly include remote tilt levers, multi-position tilting, and swing-away designs to allow rear-of-vehicle access while the rack is loaded.

Racks often include anti-sway mechanisms, padded hooks or cradles, tire straps, and locks or locking knobs to secure bikes and to attach the rack to the vehicle.

Many racks fold or collapse for compact storage or fold flat against the vehicle, making parking and stowage easier when not in use.

Hitch-mounted racks commonly fit different receiver sizes, most often 1.25" and 2" hitch receivers.
