Typical materials include plastic or PVC casings, fabrics such as nylon, spandex, or polyester (sometimes with recycled content), and nontoxic internal gel.

Most packs stay cold for about 1–2 hours after removal from the freezer. A few long‑lasting gel packs are described as remaining cold for around 3 hours.
