Controversial Case and a Feisty Judge

This novel presents a powerful story of a trial that is controversial and dangerous for the residents of Union Springs, Alabama. A small town in what Judge Stone calls “the black belt,” Union Springs is not ready for the notoriety of a court case that brings them national attention and plenty of unrest, as the residents take sides on the case at hand. Judge Mary Stone is determined to mete out justice in the case of Dr. Bria Gaines, no matter the personal cost. In the course of the story, the personal cost is not only high but dangerous for the judge herself. I enjoyed the fast pace, the short chapters and meeting all of the realistic characters. I cannot think of a better ending to such a volatile and high-profile case, and the author kept me guessing about how Judge Stone would deal with all of the repercussions as well as how she would make sure that justice was done. My favorite character was Dr. Gaines since she was adamant about her actions and truthful throughout her trial. I also liked Nova Jones, the child who became an adult too early and the way she showed respect for Judge Stone and defended Dr. Gaines. This story was heartbreaking at times, eye-opening at others one that is memorable for its honesty wrapped into a fictional story. I voluntarily received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, and all opinions expressed are my own.
